Food so Far

I've thoroughly enjoyed my entrees and they seem to be providing me with enough calories. Nesquik/protein powder/dehyrdated milk shakes twice a day are helping a lot too. The consensus on the trail is that the desert makes folks crave salty, spicy foods. This is unfortunate for those that packed their food bags with sweet items like protein bars, oatmeal, GORP, and candy. I packed about 80% savory food and 20% sweet and I think that's an ideal ratio for this climate. Other hikers flipped that ratio the other way and were suffering. They weren't getting enough salt in their diets and no matter how much water they drank their bodies were exhibiting classic signs of dehydration. A few people got quite sick in the first few days but it seems most have learned by now. There are hiker boxes at most post offices and resupply locations filled with unwanted hiker food. It's no surprise that they're overflowing with Pop Tarts, oatmeal packets, and peanut butter, while totally lacking foods like Ramen or mashed potato packets.

Here's some photos of a recent trail food creation.

That's a nature burger after adding water and shaping it. It sits in that form for 15min.

Next the condiments and the frying.

Tortillas are an excellent way to add calories and taste so I decided to make this a turn-over of sorts...

More mayo, cheese, and hot sauce on the other side - I needed a lot of calories that day.

Ate most of it and redressed it.

Now it's a burrito

Delicious.
